Eats and Beats Show: Fun and Tasty Norimaki

Education: Pre-School, Kindergarten

Gold Camera

“Eats and Beats Show” is a fusion of music and cookery. It’s aimed at young people who live on ready-made food such as fast food, instant food, and convenience-store food. It shows them the pleasure of cookery in five fun steps: watch, listen, make, sing, and eat. The program features hip-hop artist DJ Misoshiru and MC Gohan (actually one person), whose raps all double as recipes. Cooking becomes easy for viewers as they sing her original recipe songs. This edition turns the spotlight on sushi rolls (a Japanese favorite). DJ Misoshiru and MC Gohan is joined by sushi-roll artist Tama-chan. Together, they explore the artistic potential of sushi rolls in terms of appearance, taste, and music.

Asia Insight Special Vietnam War: Searching for a Young Man

Documentary: History

Gold Camera

An old film reel has been dug up from the Vietnam War. It was shot in North Vietnam, where filming was tightly restricted. The film opens with peaceful images of a farming village; a young man emerges from a house, surrounded by family and relatives. Next, we see a lion dance and scenes of people celebrating. This is not a festival, however. The young men are being sent off to war. The footage belongs to a Japanese TV news agency. It was shot sometime in 1971, but nothing else is known about the film because all supporting documentation was lost. 40 years after the war ended, our crew goes in search of a young man who appears in the film.

Dr. Mitsuya - AIDS Medication Pioneer

Documentary: Health, Medical

Silver Screen

This documentary is a detailed portrait of Hiroaki Mitsuya, the Japanese doctor who spearheaded the development of the world’s first medication to treat AIDS, and focuses on the untold story behind his pioneering research three decades ago. Although Mitsuya has been nominated for the Nobel Prize, he has never agreed to allow a TV crew to cover him – until now. Our reporting delved not only into his achievements as a researcher, but also his amiable personality and other qualities that define him as a person. Today, antiviral chemotherapy is making remarkable progress. In portraying the doctor who helped to lay the foundation for this, the program points to a model for scientists and clinicians to follow.
