Decision Time! The Coolest of the Cool 2016

Cool Japan has entered its 12th year. We will introduce the “best of cools” chosen during each episode in the past year all at once and determine “the coolest of the cool 2016”from among them. Further, we locally report on how Japanese culture is spreading overseas with things such as used bookstores and shiitake. We investigate how not only ramen and sushi but Japanese culture is spreading around the world and evolving.

In “The Coolest of Cools” we choose the coolest things from among the best of cools of 2016. A used book store was chosen as the best of cool for the “Books” theme. We did additional reporting on the popularity of a Japanese used book store chain in Paris.
In “The Coolest of Cools” we choose the coolest things from among the best of cools of 2016. People were surprised to find out that strawberry shortcake originated in Japan in the “Japanized Foreign Dishes” theme. Shiitake were chosen as the best of cool for the “Mushrooms” theme. They are popular overseas as well, and they are used in hamburgers in America.
